Mathew Brady

Background Mathew Brady was born in Warren County, New Jersey in 1822. He started life as a jewelry case maker, and studied photography in his spare time. He studied under Samuel F. B. Morse, who is well known for the invention of the telegraph. By 1844, he had his realized photography and had his own photography studio in New York. After acquiring the status of the best and most known photographer in the U.S., he opened another studio in Washington, D.C. Soon after, the Civil War started, and the country broke in half. HE followed the Union into the Battle of Bull Run, and acquired many pictures from it and the Battle of Antietam. He gave the country its first look into the carnage of the Civil War when he held his photo expedition, "The Dead of Antietam" in his New York gallery. This marked the first time most people had seen the wickedness of war. When the War ended, he found that war damaged Americans did not want to buy his photographs of the recent bloodshed. congress perchased his entire collection for $25,000, but it couldn't suspend him for long. He made a gamble, spending all his money on photographing the Civil War. He died penniless and unnoticed in 1896.

Who was Mathew Brady? Mathew Brady was a photographer during the Civil War. He and his crew took hundreds of photos of the bloody battles throughout the war. All of his works are displayed in the Library of Congress.

Tools of the Trade: To take a single photo during the Civil War, you had to have alot of equipment. Heres a sample: glass plates, chemicals, washing bucket, glass dishes to mix chemicals, a camera (heavy, I might add), tripod, covered wagon to work in and provide dark room, measuring cups, funnels, and various other tools to further develop the pictures.
